Book Overview

In this gripping narrative history, Lesley Hazleton tells the tragic story at the heart of the ongoing rivalry between the Sunni and Shia branches of Islam, a rift that dominates the news now more than ever.

Even as Muhammad lay dying, the battle over who would take control of the new Islamic nation had begun, beginning a succession crisis marked by power grabs, assassination, political intrigue, and passionate faith. Soon Islam was embroiled in civil war, pitting its founder's controversial wife Aisha against his son-in-law Ali, and shattering Muhammad’s ideal of unity.

Combining meticulous research with compelling storytelling, After the Prophet explores the volatile intersection of religion and politics, psychology and culture, and history and current events. It is an indispensable guide to the depth and power of the Shia–Sunni split.

Reading this work is my initial foray into Ms Hazleton's great writing prowess. What a delight! I cannot speak to the reliability of her research however she details her research articulately, copiously, believably. Ms Hazleton's work is imbued with a centered and grounded quality of character that is at once beauty and integrity; this can only belong to the author herself. What a boon for other readers and me to experience this and the gravitas of this staggeringly and profoundly great writer and author. "After the Prophet" (sorry, no italic on this device) is a brilliantly beautiful read. I could not put it down. I have never read a style quite like Ms Hazleton's nor have I read of her subject matter, of which I have a keen interest. I love how she writes! Anyone who has an interest in the Near and Middle East will be well compensated by reading Ms Hazleton's work. If you simply love great writing you will do well by reading Ms Hazleton. I bought and began her book: "Jezebel" and will read all that I can find of hers.
