Book Overview

The searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

I only give 5 stars for books like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones... That being said it I could do another half star I would! The journey the characters undertake are a raw look at humanity. The perspective of the main character is so stark and realistic. The fact that you journey deep into his psyche and yet never know him. You have so much and so little. It was a read like no other. Hope there is a part 2!!!

Although McCarthy creates a novel full of tension and wretched survival in a post-apocalyptic world. The messages portrayed by the father and son are powerful and impactful. Will definitely read again!
  • Unlike anything else

I only read this book because my dad said to. I was a little skeptical when I started but quickly began enjoying every second of it. It's a slow moving book with many horrible and gruesome events that take place. The conversations between the man and boy are very well written, like an actual child is talking. Overall it was very entertaining, fascinating, and heartbreaking book all at once.
  • A book of its own.

I love the book and I love the movie. I read this book in high school and did a report on it. I was given an A for "nailing it" (the exact words use by the teacher). This book was a page turner for me. I wanted to know what happen next and before I knew it I had read the final page I grew sad that I wouldn't find out what happened next. I do not usually like books that could have terrible things in them but u needed to know what beheld in this book "The Road"

Overrated, depressing book. Forced myself to keep reading to give it an honest shot. No thanks!

A very good read from start to finish. I could not bring myself to put the book down. I would read on my break at work and in between classes at school. Highly recommend to any one who was a good post apocalyptic story
