Book Overview

Johnny Gunther was only seventeen years old when he died of a brain tumor. During the months of his illness, everyone near him was unforgettably impressed by his level-headed courage, his wit and quiet friendliness, and, above all, his unfaltering patience through times of despair. This deeply moving book is a father's memoir of a brave, intelligent, and spirited boy.

This is an excellent book that I first read in high school in the mid 60's. I reread the book and found that after years of research, Glioblastoma treatments have not really improved the life expectancy for those who are diagnosed with this devastating disease. This is a story of bravery, and of unrealistic hope and insurmountable suffering both physical and mental. One critic of this work found it boring. Obviously this person failed to see the importance and significance of this book written 70 years ago to correlate to the recent death of Britney Maynard who end her own life in Oregon who had the same illness. I wonder if she had read this would she had taken her own life so so soon?
